The first mountain stage of the Tour was a very long and hard day for the battered Fabio Jakobsen. The Soudal Quick-Step sprinter was still suffering from his crash yesterday and had to let go early in the stage today.

Yesterday Jakobsen crashed less than 2 kilometers from the finish. He hit the ground at a speed of 63 km/h. It was a solid taste. That was also proven by the top tube of his bicycle, which had broken in two.

Before the start of the stage, Jakobsen already indicated that he had not had the best night. “I lost quite a bit of skin,” he said about the consequences of his fall. “My whole right side is open. I am also well bruised. Obviously not super sleepy either. It won’t be easy today.”

And that soon became apparent, because after about ten kilometers Jakobsen had to let go. On the first best nod of the day, Jakobsen had to get off. The Dutch spurt bomb was immediately joined by his pilot Michael Morkov. It was with the help of the Dane that he quickly rejoined the peloton.

But on a new slope, Jakobsen had to get off again moments later. Definitely this time. Soon he looked at a backlog of a few minutes. And the categorized climbs were still to come.

It became a fight against the time limit for the Dutchman, but in the end he reached the finish well within the time limit. “I had a bad night, thanks to my team”, it sounded emotionally at the finish. “My legs exploded in the beginning. Luckily I came in a group with Cavendish, a friend. We sprint together. We also do this together. It was tough, but I don’t want to go home.”
