German swimmer Leonie Beck, former European distance champion, won the world title in the 10 km open water race in Fukuoka, Japan. After more than two hours of effort, the 26-year-old Beck produced an acceleration in the last hundred meters to clearly outrun Australia’s Chelsea Gubecka.
The young American Katie Grimes, 17 years old, conquered the third place, beating the Dutch Sharon van Rouwendaal, reigning world champion, in the photo finish. The three medalists validate their qualification for next year’s Paris Olympic Games.
