Spanish Team Exits Hopman Cup with Doubles Defeat to Croats

The Spanish team, with no chance of reaching the final of the Hopman Cup after the results of the individual matches, said goodbye this Saturday with a defeat in doubles for the couple formed by Carlos Alcaraz and Rebeka Masarova, who fell to the Croatians Donna Vekic and Borna Coric by 1-6, 6-4 and 14-12.

The Croatian comeback, which they certified in an even ‘super tie break’, allows them to play the final of the tournament held in Nice (France) this Sunday against the Swiss team.

With nothing at stake for them, the Spanish authoritatively took a first set that had no color. Alcaraz and Masarova took advantage of three of the four break opportunities presented to them and did not concede any to their opponents, which resulted in the 6-1 with which they seemed to be on track for victory in just 25 minutes.

The Croats woke up after the restart, aware that the ticket to the final was at stake. They broke the first two serves of the Spaniards and quickly went up 3-0 although they reacted immediately, with their fourth break of the night, the world number one and Masarova, who however could not recover their second setback and the sleeve went to the Croats, who took advantage of their first opportunity to tie the game (6-4).

In the ‘super tie break’ the dominance was alternate. Spain missed their first match point and Croatia sealed their ticket to the final by hitting their fourth chance that raised the final score to 14-12.
