Market value of S. van den Berg

“We have been in close contact with Sepp since the end of the season. He was quickly convinced of the Mainz 05 project and made his commitment to us early on. Intensive talks and negotiations followed with those responsible at Liverpool FC – it’s all the better that Sepp can now take the next step in his career here at Mainz 05,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt about the second signing after goalkeeper Daniel Batz (Saarbrücken).

Coach Bo Svensson added: “Sepp is a young, incredibly talented central defender who already brings a lot: he has technique, understanding of the game, physicality and mentality. We had very good talks and both sides quickly had the feeling that it was a good fit. Together we want to raise Sepp to a new level and make it better in order to be able to further develop his potential.”

Van den Berg himself said: “I had talks with Mainz 05 and especially with Bo Svensson early on, I really like the way he sees football and wants it to be played here. Of course, before I came here, I also spoke to Jürgen Klopp – he raved about Mainz and said that I would feel very comfortable here. I’ve been here in the stadium before, I know the fans and I’m happy to achieve something together with the team.”

Since moving from his hometown of Zwolle to Anfield in 2019, van den Berg had played 270 minutes in four games for the Liverpool pros, but had mostly played in the Reds Under-23s and ahead of Schalke at English second division side Preston North End awarded. He made nine appearances for the Royal Blues last season, having been out for several months with a serious ligament injury.
