Senegalese Judo Gears Up for the 2024 Olympics and Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games

After a harvest of 18 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 12 de aronze, during the five open and African cup tournaments disputed since the beginning of the year, Senegalese judo continues its dynamic towards the major meetings of the 2024 Olympic Games and the “Dakar2026” Youth Olympic Games.

With this in mind, the Senegalese Federation has rolled out its preparation program focused mainly on its Judo Academies but also participation in upcoming international competitions. Deadlines that are based on the reinforcement of achievements, in particular the “Judo-Education” project, Horizon Youth Olympic Games “Dakar 2026” or the construction of the latest generation international development center. An infrastructure that meets international standards and complies with the requirements of the International Judo Federation. This, instead of the national dojo which lives its last hours of existence.

With a harvest of 18 gold medals, 15 silver medals, 12 bronze medals and a place of first nation at the successive “open” of Tunis, Luanda, Abidjan and Niamey, Senegalese judo is on a good way in the preparation for future deadlines and in particular the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the YOG “Dakar2026”. For the Paris2024 Olympics, the Senegalese Judo Federation will rely on its academies. “There is no specific preparation of the national teams.

It will be supported by the Lamine Gueye Academy, Bilal Fofana’s training center in Saint Louis, the one that is being set up by Hortance Portance. When the time comes, a selection will be made for the Games. When the time comes, a selection will be made. Today, judo is one of the medal hopefuls for the YOG,” said Ababacar Ngom, president of the Senegalese Judo Federation. To achieve the objectives, Alexandre Diédhiou, director of the Lamine Guéye Academy organized a training course with the help of 4 regional leagues on July 22 and 23. With at the end, a work of detection of 50 young people who will integrate the said academy.

For the two major events, in the line of sight, the Senegalese Judo Federation, also has the objective set for the next Games of La Francophonie, the African cadet and junior championships which will take place in Madagascar but also at the African championships which will take place in Casablanca.

“Senegal has been preparing continuously since January. This year’s Can senior, which will take place from September 8 to 11, will be very tough. Because we are getting closer to the Paris2024 Olympic Games. It is a specific preparation. We are planning to go to France which is ready to put around twenty centers for free. Previously, we have the Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa, the African Cadet and Junior Championships scheduled for July 27 to 30, which is important because they will allow us to consolidate the achievements and win the maximum number of medals”, informs Me Karim Seck, director of national teams.

Invited to the 2023 World Combat Games Mixed Teams in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) in October 2023, Senegal judo is also looking forward to participating in a high-level tournament. This event brings together the first 3 in the world ranking list of senior mixed teams of the IJF Africa.

A Regional Training Center for West Africa in Diamniadio

Beyond guiding his athletes to major events, Me Ababacar Ngom and the federal team have their sights set on his ambition to create a Regional Training Center for West Africa in Diamniadio. A new national Dojo which, according to him, will make it possible to restore its image and to Africa to have a last generation infrastructure, with international standards, in accordance with the requirements of the IJF.

According to Me Ngom, the project would include a reception center, a restaurant and training rooms for advanced training and high-level courses that could accommodate competitions in all combat disciplines (Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Kung Fu).

This, after the National Society for the Management and Exploitation of the State’s Built Heritage ordered, a few months ago, the release, without delay, of the site housing the National Dojo for its demolition. “This decision tarnishes the beautiful story of a national heritage, a museum and an elite training center for all martial arts, a crucible for the emergence of our champions crowned with glory for the greatness of the Senegalese nation”, laments the president of the FSJ.

In its other projects, the FSJ indicates that a global study is underway and concerns the Senegalese training project “Judo-Education, Horizon Youth Olympic Games DAKAR2026”, with the support of the European Union.
