SC Freiburg Loaned Out Players in 2022/23: Perspectives of Lino Tempelmann and Keven Schlotterbeck

SC Freiburg loaned out five players in 2022/23. While one is due to mature for another year, two have already been sold. Are Lino Tempelmann and Keven Schlotterbeck staying? These are the perspectives of the duo.

Will not stay at SC Freiburg and will probably not return to 1. FC Nürnberg either: Lino Tempelmann. IMAGO/Eibner

In January 2023, the term of the loan was not in the announcement with which SC announced Hugo Siquet’s move to Cercle Brugge. But one thing is now clear: The right-back, who failed disappointingly with Belgium like the DFB team in the preliminary round of the U-21 European Championship, should mature at home until the summer of 2024, before he might make a new attempt at the sports club.

As expected, there is no such thing for Kevin Schade. FC Brentford and SC Freiburg recently confirmed the national player’s move to the Premier League. The preceding six-month loan from last winter was primarily based on economic considerations. Freiburg can book the lion’s share of the 25 million euro base fee (including rental fee: 1 million euros) in the freshly started 2023/24 financial year.

There will also be around 300,000 euros, which the fixed transfer from Nishan Burkart to FC Winterthur will bring in as a fee. The Swiss first division side drew a purchase option for the fast attacking force, who recorded three goals and one assist in 24 league games on loan in 2022/23. The Swiss, who trained at Manchester United from 2014 to 2019, made 53 regional league appearances (17 goals), 21 third division games (2) and one joker appearance in the Bundesliga in just over three years in Freiburg. In the prank team, however, Burkart could not prevail.

Tempelmann will probably not stay in Freiburg – FCN doesn’t seem to be either

Lino Tempelmann and Keven Schlotterbeck also failed to do this in the long term. Tempelmann has played 62 second division games (six goals) for 1. FC Nürnberg on loan in the past two years and is now looking for the next step in his career. One thing is clear: no position has been reserved for him at the SC.

Apparently, Tempelmann does not want to stay with FCN, who would like to keep him, and is currently sounding out the inquiries. There should be options in the Bundesliga – Heidenheim is interested -, the 2nd division and abroad. Interested parties would probably have to pay a transfer fee in the range of one million euros for the eighth. It is possible that Tempelmann will first serve at the Freiburg training session on July 10th.

This is also conceivable at Schlotterbeck. After his successful loan year to Union Berlin (27 competitive games in 2019/20), he did not establish himself as an important pillar at SC as hoped. With a clear downward trend, he made 44 competitive appearances in the string ensemble in two and a half years before he was loaned out to Bochum during the winter break.

Schlotterbeck has no future in Breisgau, but is not thinking about the 2nd division

At VfL, things didn’t go well for the central defender with his strong left foot either. Sometimes he was ill, sometimes injured, sometimes he was out, in 13 appearances he was only eight times in the starting line-up, but scored a goal against Hertha in the first and second leg, which was important for remaining in the league. All in all, they were quite happy with Schlotterbeck in Bochum and would like to continue.

A transfer – which SC is aiming for because it is planning without Schlotterbeck – is currently not possible for VfL. The 2nd division, on the other hand, is no alternative for Schlotterbeck (83 Bundesliga appearances). He, too, is examining options with his adviser – in the House of Lords and abroad. Its market value is likely to be around three million euros. So there will probably soon be two more sales in the SC transfer balance.
