San Francisco 49ers Owners Acquire Leeds United, Charting New Path for the Club

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The owners of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers take control of English soccer league Leeds United.

Leeds United announced on Monday that the English Football League has approved the sale of the club to 49ers Enterprises, allowing for the “immediate transition of ownership”. Leeds were relegated from the Premier League to the second division Championship this season.

“This is an important moment for Leeds United and we are ready to work hard,” said Paraag Marathe, who will take over as club president. “The transition is a necessary reset to veer in a new direction.”

Marathe takes the place of Andrea Radrizzani as the new majority. Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear will remain in his same position.

Marathe and 49ers CEO Jed York lead 49ers Enterprises. The group first invested in Leeds in 2018 and increased its stake to 44% by the end of 2021 and reached an agreement last month to take control of Leeds along with NBA players Larry Nance Jr. and TJ McConnell as minority owners.

Golfer Jordan Spieth said last week that he and Justin Thomas are also minority partners.
