Sailing Test Event for Paris 2024 Olympic Games Begins in Marseille

The first test event (sailing) for next year’s Olympic games began in the southern French city of Marseille.

Until July 16, 2023, the test will take place at Roucas Blanc Marina, in Marseille, where the Paris 2024 sailing events will take place.

Those competitions in 10 disciplines aim to ensure that the site is operational and there are no problems with technical, medical and safety devices in the Mediterranean Sea.

The authentic dress rehearsal for the upcoming event under the five rings began on Sunday and a technical report is expected to be produced after its conclusion to identify the necessary improvements.

The event is not a complete copy of what is expected to happen during the competitions next year, since there is no television broadcast or ticket sales, but the technical delegate of navigation, Richard Navarro, believes that it will be a useful exercise to rectify any problem in time.

“The event is specifically organized to identify potential issues, as we have a year to implement the necessary changes,” Navarro said.

Five new events were added to the Paris 2024 sailing program. The competitions will offer 330 places (20 fewer than Tokyo 2020), 165 per gender, in 10 events. France will receive 14 of those quotas, seven per gender, as long as their athletes are eligible to compete. Four places are reserved for universality places. Each national Olympic committee can get up to 14 places, with one boat per event.

The jousting will take place in the 12 months prior to the Games. Those trials will close for athletics and para-athletics in June 2024, at the Stade de France.

The program is divided into three categories, those proposed by the organizers of Paris 2024, those of national or international federations and those that are operational.

For Cuban athletes, the judo, parajudo and wrestling events in August-September in Campo de Marte will be extremely interesting; and the international sprint canoeing open from August 30 to September 1.

Paris 2024 will host the XXXIII Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11, with the presence of 10,500 athletes, 50 percent men and women, who will compete in 32 sports and 329 events.
