Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Falls Short of Finals in Regional Sports Competition

There are still events in cycling, as well as relays in swimming and athletics. There are finals in team sports, but unfortunately the region did not reach them.

In athletics, the coaches showed the way for their young proteges by winning the friendly coaches relay. The team was made up of Laurence Normandin, William Desrosiers, André Soucy and Félix Provencher (missionary and brother of Théo and Maéva).

“In athletics, we have a young team with mostly young athletes, while the best are young. This is why we stood out less in terms of medals. We are really very young, whereas last year, in Laval, we had nevertheless made a good figure”, notes Frédéric Bouchard, head of mission of the regional delegation.

There are still the men’s and women’s relays and even if it would seem surprising to be on the podium, the chef de mission recalls that last year, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean caused a “mega surprise” in the men’s 4x100m relay by winning bronze.

4th in open water

As for aquatic sports, in open water swimming, flag bearer Laurence Michaud finished at the foot of the podium in the 5 kilometer final.

On the pool side, Simon Savard, silver medalist in the 100m backstroke on Saturday, finished 7th in the 200m backstroke. Félicinoise Gabrielle Gibbons-Renaud finished 8th in the A final in the 400m freestyle, while Jonquiéroise Justine Michaud, sister of Laurence, took 10th place in the A final in the 200m individual medley (QNI).

In cycling, the best performance in the women’s U15 road event belongs to Mathylde Fortin, with a 16th position, and among the boys, Charles Fortin, with an 18th place. Among the U17s, Éloi Boisvert finished in 30th position.

In triathlon, in the relay, the regional team finished 6th out of 11 teams. In the final standings, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean finished in 8th place.

Team sports

In beach volleyball, the duo of Maryssa Boivin and Léanne Fortin faced in the quarter-finals the representatives of Centre-du-Québec, who would ultimately be crowned champions. Boivin and Fortin then lost against Chaudière-Appalaches before defeating the Outaouais, to finish in 7th place.

“We’re like validating our level, since last year, they finished sixth,” recalls mission leader Frédéric Bouchard, pointing out that Léanne Fortin had participated in the Games in Laval and Rimouski. Last year, she was Laval’s flag bearer in 2022.

In baseball, the Royals of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean lost their flag 15-4 against Chaudière-Appalaches, which earned them 14th position.

Also in team sports, the men’s basketball team suffered a 57-40 loss to Sud-Ouest to finish in 16th place. In women’s, the SagLac team ended on a high note by signing a 50-26 victory against Laval, to take 15th place.

Block 2 Delegation

Tuesday morning, a delegation of 82 Block 2 athletes will head to Rimouski, while a group of 95 young people will return home.

“I’m really super satisfied with what was done in the first block,” said Frédéric Bouchard. I think that our objective of giving a great experience of sports competitions to our young people has been achieved. Our gang is really cool, like always. We think we have offered a great experience to the young people. We have experienced one, and so have I as a chef. (Monday evening), so we take advantage one last time of the beautiful family of the first Block that we created and we prepare to welcome the others (Tuesday)! »
