Hamad Medjedovic is in Gstaad in his first semi-final at ATP Tour level

Last year, Hamad Medjedovic already showed where the journey in the ATP ranking can lead, as he impressively won his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour in Lüdenscheid, Germany, in the summer. In the final, the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen didn’t stand a chance – it was 6:1, 6:2 for the then 19-year-old Serb.

Our tennisnet newcomer Daniel Hofmann recently told the editors that right after the triumph at the time on the center court he was doing a winner’s interview including some shapely pictures with the southern Slav when suddenly his mobile phone rang. Who was it? Mother, father, girlfriend,…? No, Novak Djokovic personally was on the phone and congratulated his protégé on the first big step on the men’s tour.

It is well known in tennis insider circles that the 23-time Grand Slam champion took the new hope of Serbian men’s tennis under his wing some time ago. “Nole” rightly thinks highly of the 20-year-old talent: “As far as the game and athletic training are concerned, he’s already one of the top 100 players in the world, but certain steps still need time.”

“His work ethic has definitely changed”

True to his last name, the man from the city of Novi Pazar, which has a population of around 100,000, put in strong performances this year at the Challenger events in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, and in Mauthausen (Austria), in the latter in the final against Filip Misolic from Graz, who is also currently playing well.

And in Gstaad, Switzerland, Medjedovic is currently showing what potential he has. “His work ethic has changed significantly,” Djokovic continued. “He’s completely changed his approach to training and competitions, his diet, his recovery methods, some habits and a lot more.”

Medjedovic himself can hardly believe his luck at being able to rely on the help of the 36-year-old record player: “To be able to count on his support means a lot for a young player like me. [..] If I could do half of what he did, I’d be very happy.”
