Hye-ryun Baek (Democratic Party of Korea, Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, and Chairman of the National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee) has recently secured a special subsidy for a sports park expansion project in the district, attracting attention. Her various activities according to her extraordinary love of life sports by Congressman Baek are well known within her constituency.
Rep. Baek emphasized through SNS, “I support all sports people who are creating a healthy democratic society through communication and harmony between neighbors as well as physical health through sports for life.” It is a story that sports for all has the effect of improving the political culture of Korea, which is increasingly polarized.
From the point of view of this ‘life sports theory’, Congressman Baek’s securing of special subsidy tax can have a meaning beyond simply taking care of the local district budget. If communication between residents can be promoted by supporting sports for all, this can be seen as a detour to gradually resolve the polarized political culture.
‘Dangsu Sports Park’ located in Dangsu-dong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon-si, Baek’s constituency, is 9063㎡ in size and is a favorite place for local residents. However, there has been a continuous demand for expansion due to lack of sports and auxiliary facilities.
Accordingly, the city of Suwon secured some financial resources and recently started the expansion work (2nd stage creation project). With a total area of 16,647 square meters, a water park, soccer field, floor fountain, and parking lot will be newly built.
The goal is to complete the project in 2024, but securing funding is not an easy task. A total of 9.582 billion won is needed for the Dangsu Sports Park Phase 2 construction project. Currently, it is known that 1.617 billion won in government funds, 700 million won in special adjustment grants, and 726.5 million won in city funds have been secured.
More than 6.5 billion won is needed to complete the project. In the midst of this, Congressman Baek secured 700 million won in special subsidies from the Ministry of Public Administration and Security to cover the construction cost. Considering the remaining construction cost, it is an evaluation that the water has been turned on to secure the budget for the second-phase development project of Dangsu Sports Park, although it is a lot of insufficient financial resources.
Rep. Baek said, “We will do our best to make it a multi-purpose sports park that can be used by people of all ages by installing a multi-purpose exercise space, water play facilities, and an outdoor stage through securing a special subsidy tax.”
The special allocation tax is a financial resource that is granted by attaching certain conditions or limiting the use among local allocation taxes issued by the central government. In other words, the budget was secured for the 2nd stage of Dangsu Sports Park.
In the meantime, Congressman Baek has shown a lot of interest in sports for life in the district. On the 15th, he attended the ‘Korea Health Gwangri Association Jangbae Badminton Competition’ held in Suwon, and on the 9th, he also appeared in the party’s badminton club competition.
Last month, he also participated in the Suwon Dance Sports Competition, and also participated in the ‘Kwon Seon-gu Hanmaum Sports Badminton Competition’ and the ‘National Badminton Competition for the Disabled’ held at Seosuwon Chibo Gymnasium.
Rep. Baek said on his social media, “I hope that the world we live in will become a brighter and happier society through communication and harmony with friends while maintaining health through badminton as a daily sport.”
Koreans are changing to avoid mingling with other political parties they support. Asking about political parties or politicians is also referred to as a ‘taboo’ like asking about the university your child attends. Rep. Baek’s argument that life sports, which can be enjoyed while sweating together in such a gloomy situation, can promote communication and harmony, is evaluated as persuasive.
