Renske Leijten Steps Down as Member of Parliament: A Look Back at Her Impact

Leijten has worked for years for good care, for democracy, for the referendum and has been crucial in exposing the benefits scandal. ‘I certainly look back on my time as a Member of Parliament with pride. SP actions led to the adoption of the first two laws of the SP, against wage dumping in home care and to prevent tenders in home care. I am also proud that we have been able to prevent market forces and tenders in ambulance care. The arguments were not listened to, but the actions were,’ says Leijten. ‘But it is sad that almost everything we warned about with the decentralization and cutbacks in healthcare has come true, with major consequences for people.’

Naturally, Leijten remains passionate about the benefits scandal and the people who have been subjected to unprecedented injustice as a result. ‘By trusting and organizing people, that has been exposed. By not accepting that only 2000 people would receive compensation, the scheme started in 2020 for many more people who were wrongly branded as fraudsters. It is totally astonishing to see how the government – with the support of a majority in the House – is handling this scandal,’ says Leijten.

The SP is incredibly grateful to Renske Leijten for all the years she has devoted herself to as a Member of Parliament. SP leader Marijnissen: ‘Renske is exactly what is often lacking in political The Hague. A real voice of the people, always involved and enthusiastic and approachable for everyone. Renske shows how you can be active in parliament without becoming a parliamentarian. Politicians do not need less Renske Leijtens, but more. Fortunately she remains active in the SP, but we will miss her terribly in The Hague.’

Renske Leijten will officially say goodbye to the House of Representatives on Tuesday 4 July. On Wednesday, July 5, Nicole Temmink will be installed as a Member of Parliament.
