The peloton will enter Paris tonight. Renaat Schotte and José De Cauwer also complete one more stage, but yesterday they looked back on this 110th Tour de France after the last mountain stage. They bundled their conclusions and impressions in this analysis. And of course the next Tour was already discussed.
Renaat: “What feeling dominates after this edition of the Tour de France, José?”
José: “A very positive feeling, also as far as the Belgians are concerned. On the one hand we have seen a great Tour, on the other hand there has been a small anticlimax after the end of the battle. But it lasted a long time and you cannot expect everything. It was a very nice and difficult Tour.”
Renaat: “The tension was gone after the time trial and the Col de la Loze.”
José: “Yes, everything fell away there and then the stories come. Wasn’t Tadej Pogacar’s basis enough? Before, everyone said yes, because it is Pogacar. It is now 2-2 with Jonas Vingegaard and so they have to return next year.”
Renaat: “A boring Tour, that has been behind us for years. Last year everyone was lyrical. Was this Tour even better?”
José: “We have really seen battles. It is a kind of new cycling that no one could have predicted 10 years ago. Things like that attack by Pascal Eenkhoorn, that is du jamais vu. Riders continue to fight from the start to the finish. This was publicity for cycling.”
“The Tour may be a little more global”
Renaat: “If this Tour comes up in a few years, what will stay with you?”
José: “With a Belgian touch, these are the 4 victories of sprint king Jasper Philipsen, but of course you also think of that time trial with an outstanding Vingegaard.”
Renaat: “We saw a yellow rocket at work. Was that one of the best time trials in history?”
José: “Apparently, given the power he has pushed there. He is simply the more than deserved winner.”
Renaat: “Is that a plea for more time trials in the Tour?”
José: “50 kilometers, with an opening time trial and one on the way, should be possible. ASO should also consider whether it organizes a Tour for riders around 60 kg or can there be riders who weigh a little more? Will it remain a climbers’ round?”
Renaat: “The French always throw in those high mountains.”
José: “Yes, but there is a difference with how it works. What kind of cycling do you want? A type like Miguel Indurain, five-time overall winner, should no longer come to the Tour with his 75 kg, hey.”
Renaat: “Are you now pleading for a Round for Wout van Aert?”
José: “A bit more global, yes.”

Renaat: “I don’t think we will see that in the short term. Although Remco Evenepoel is expected to start next year. Will ASO take that into account and design a course for him?”
José: “Yes, if that course comes close to a Frenchman, but they don’t have one. Would the Tour go along with that? It shouldn’t be.”
Renaat: “I’ve already heard that ASO is crazy about the Belgian world champion.”
José: “He is multilingual and not many Tour winners have also been world champions.”
Remco Evenepoel normally makes his debut in the Tour in 2024.
Renaat: “We now have two years in a row Vingegaard versus Pogacar. Have we left for a few more years?”
José: “You have to add Evenepoel to that. We especially hope that he can offer resistance to them. We have not seen that yet. He can also drive such powers, but then you will not win the Tour. It is about a wider range.”
“The World Cup? I’ve seen a really good Mads Pedersen”
Renaat: “Who charmed you?”
José: “Maxim Van Gils. He has been through a lot. I don’t see him going for a final classification, but a stage victory is certainly possible. Although it is becoming increasingly difficult to do that.”
Renaat: “And who is a setback?”
José: “Difficult, but I might call Julian Alaphilippe. There was fighting spirit, but he never survived.”
Renaat: “Is he still a candidate for the World Cup?”
José: “I’ll put him in. He’s already done it twice, even after a similar Tour. I’m not serving him.”
Renaat: “In 2 weeks we will be in Glasgow for the road race. Have we seen the future world champion in this Tour?”
José: “I’ve seen a very good Mads Pedersen and an aggressive Wout van Aert. Mathieu van der Poel was almost in between. You can’t draw an arrow on it. But I think the Belgians have the strongest team.”
Mads Pedersen already became world champion in 2019.
