Referee Marco Serra was dropped after controversy with Mourinho & Milan

Referee Marco Serra will not serve in the 2023/2024 Italian League. Serra was involved in a controversy with Jose Mourinho and judged ‘robbing’ victory AC Milan.

According to the news reported Football Italia, AIA (Italian Referee Association) has decided to remove Marco Serra from the list of referees for the 2023/2024 season. Serra will not be in charge of Serie A and Serie B next season.

However, Serra will still be an official. The 40-year-old man will be on duty in the VAR room.

This decision was taken after Serra was involved in a number of scandals in the 2022/2023 season. The most dramatic was when he led the Milan vs Spezia match in mid-January.

When the score was tied at 1-1, Milan broke Spezia’s goal through Junior Messias’ shot in injury time. However, referee Marco Serra blew the whistle first, indicating Ante Rebic was violated and did not decide to play on for Milan.

After the incident, Spezia actually turned ahead through a counterattack. Milan ended up losing 1-2.

Serra returned to the spotlight when he was involved in a dispute with Jose Mourinho. The incident occurred when Serra became the fourth official in the Cremonese vs AS Roma match.

Mourinho admits he was insulted by Serra The Portuguese coach then received a red card and was suspended for two matches. Meanwhile, Serra was rested for one week.
