Quinten Timber refuses a new role at Feyenoord: ‘He is a bit difficult’

Quinten Timber no longer wants to play in the rear, Rutger Vinke of Feyenoord Transfermarkt reports in the live stream Transferspace on Twitter. Timber, one of the most expensive purchases in Feyenoord’s club history, is going for his chance in midfield, despite great competition.

Timber mainly played as a right back in the second part of the 2020/21 season in Jong Ajax, before transferring to FC Utrecht on a free transfer. From that moment on, the Jong Oranje-international almost exclusively played in his beloved midfield. Last year, Feyenoord pulled the bag for Timber, who was not fully convincing in his first season and was also struggling with a serious knee injury.

At Feyenoord, Lutsharel Geertruida and Marcus Pedersen, the regular right backs in the selection, may be up for a transfer. “They had hoped that he wanted to play right back when Geertruida left. However, he has been tested zero times at right back,” says Vinke in a live stream on Twitter. “That has a reason: he does not want that himself. He is a bit difficult about it.”

Vinke doubts whether Timber will conquer a basic place as a midfielder. “He has to play out a lot of players in midfield.” Feyenoord lost captain Orkun Kökçü to Benfica and brought back Ramiz Zerrouki (FC Twente) and Thomas van den Belt (PEC Zwolle) in that position. Together with Mats Wieffer, the acquisitions form formidable competition for Timber. “Personally, and that’s my opinion as a fan, I don’t see it,” says Vinke. “But what is not yet can come. It has been a very expensive acquisition.”
