Puerto Rico Basketball Team Gears Up for Basketball World Cup Preparations

A little less than a month before the start of the Basketball World Cup, several members of the men’s National Team jumped onto the court of the Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum today to begin their preparation for the tournament, which will take place in three countries: the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, starting August 25.

Ten of the 14 players called up attended the first training session, including John Holland, Chris Ortiz, Isaiah Piñeiro, Timajh Parker, Phillip Wheeler and Ismael Romero.

In the case of Aleem Ford, Ethan Thompson, Tremont Waters and George Conditt IV would join practices this weekend.

The practice was directed by the national pilot, Nelson Colón, together with his technical staff, and with the presence of the general manager, Carlos Arroyo, among others.

In the case of Romero, the basket player has just completed this week the final series of the National Superior Basketball with the Vaqueros de Bayamón.

The shortlist of 14 players includes the basket players Tremont Waters, Jordan Howard, Ethan Thompson, John Holland, Stephen Thompson, Phillip Wheeler, Aleem Ford, Isaiah Piñeiro, Justin Reyes, Christopher Ortiz, Ysmael Romero, George Conditt IV, Timajh Parker-Rivera and Arnaldo Toro.

Puerto Rico will not have the enebe player José Alvarado after the New Orleans Pelicans did not give him authorization.

The national quintet will carry out the first part of their preparation on the island and will even hold a warm-up match against the Dominican Republic on August 4 at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum of Puerto Rico.

Then, the quintet will leave for Las Vegas, where they plan to play against the United States on August 7 and on August 19 they will face Lithuania in Taiwan.

The Basketball World Cup will take place from August 25 to September 10.

Puerto Rico will be part of Group B, along with Serbia, China and South Sudan that will see action at the Arena Coliseum in Manila, capital of the Philippines.

Puerto Rico will play South Sudan on Saturday, August 26, against Serbia on Monday, August 28, and against China on Wednesday, August 30.

The best two teams from each group will advance to the second round.
