Already at the beginning of June there were rumors that Zipser would sign in his home town. At that time, however, without concrete discussions in the background.

BILD learned: Only two weeks ago, the Academics had the opportunity to sign Zipser. Since then, negotiations have taken place – with success!

The Heidelbergers will present their newcomer on Tuesday evening.

There have been rumors for a long time: change sensation to Bayern star

Alex Vogel, sporting director of the MLP Academics, to BILD: “This is a sensational change for us! We were promoted two years ago and have always said that we want to develop further.”

Vogel says of his childhood friend Zipser: “It’s an incredibly beautiful story that we’re bringing a Heidelberger back after ten years.”

During that time he played for Bayern, from where he switched to the NBA. There he was under contract with the Chicago Bulls between 2016 and 2018. He made a total of 104 appearances for the club. Scored 4.7 points and grabbed 2.6 rebounds.

With a detour via Spain, he returned to Munich in 2019. In June 2021 he had to be operated on after a brain hemorrhage. He survived the operation without any permanent damage. A month after the surgery, he extended his contract with Bayern until 2024.

Last season he averaged 4.0 points and 1.7 rebounds per game with the cup winners.

Vogel: “He’s still one of the best forwards in Germany. He’s had a difficult time over the past two years but he’s on the way back. We give him all the time and the right environment so that he can reach his old level of performance.”

Heidelberg’s sporting director continued: “We can be very, very proud of the commitment. But it is important to assess the situation correctly. We must not now believe that everything will go by itself.”
