The Special Olympics Paraguay delegation recently completed a historic participation in the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

In Berlin, the ambassadors of the national sport stood on the podium in all the disciplines in which they participated, achieving 42 medals.

The closing ceremony was held at the historic Brandenburg Gate in the German capital and brought together more than 21,000 people, including 6,500 athletes, 18,000 volunteers, 3,000 coaches and more than 9,000 relatives of athletes.

“The athletes who competed in Berlin are the best in our country. They have participated in regional competitions, in OEP National Games and managed to become national champions, which allowed them to be in Germany. For months, they prepared and trained a lot. The result is in sight with this historic achievement”, praised Luis Cáceres Brun, head of Paraguay Special Olympics.

Rocío Carrillo, executive director of Paraguay Special Olympics, highlighted everything that was achieved. “The athletes are an example of inclusion for the country and the world, in a contest that brought together almost 7,000 athletes. It was a real pride to represent the country and leave it at the top. We are heartily grateful,” she added.

Paraguay now begins the preparation to receive in Asunción the next Latin American Games of Special Olympics. The appointment will be in 2024 and our athletes are eager to be the hosts to receive fellow athletes and friends from all over the continent.

“This medal is the symbol that the word impossible does not exist, when with work, effort, perseverance and discipline all objectives can be achieved when one proposes it with the heart. You are the example, champions on and off the field”, congratulated Robert Harrison, president of the Paraguayan Football Association during the recognition ceremony for athletes and members of the futsal delegation, who became owners of the gold medal in undefeated form.

“The athletes are an example of inclusion for the country and the world, in a contest that brought together almost 7,000 athletes.”
