An agreement between the New York Mets and the Texas Rangers has finally been reached for the exchange of pitcher Max Scherzer, according to information from journalist Jon Heyman.
In return, the Mets get their hands on Luisangel Acuña, the brother of Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, who is ranked 44th best prospect in MLB.
Announced earlier in the evening on Saturday, the transaction took time to be formalized as the right-handed ace benefits from a non-movement clause in the 3-year, $ 130 million contract he signed in 2022 with the Mets .
Still according to Heyman, the impasse was in the fact that Scherzer had an option on the last year (2024) of his contract. The Rangers therefore wanted to secure his services at this salary for next season, while Scherzer wanted to keep his option, to possibly get more money at the end of the current campaign. It was ultimately the triple recipient of the Cy-Young who won his case and he retains his option for 2024.
However, Jeff Passan of ESPN hinted that Scherzer eventually decided to stay with Rangers the following season.
Rangers wanted the deal in which they sent top prospect Acuna to guarantee Scherzer through 2024. Max is not required to transform his 2024 player option for $43.33M into a guarantee now, so it’s a snag. Mets were willing to pay down deal “significantly”to move Scherzer for Acuna
