Nathan Aspinall Claims Victory at World Matchplay Darts Tournament

Nathan Aspinall had gained a bit of a reputation as the eternal runner-up in recent years, because outside of the title at the UK Open in 2019, his trophy cabinet remained almost empty.

Also at the World Matchplay, one of the most important tournaments of the darts season, the 32-year-old Englishman again mixed with the top players.

The tournament featured many surprises in the early rounds. Defending champion Michael van Gerwen already went out in the first round against Brendan Dolan, Peter Wright, Gerwyn Pric and Dimitri Van den Bergh only finished one round longer.

The latter was thrown out of the tournament by Jonny Clayton, who continued his way into the final. Until 5-5, the Welshman was able to keep pace with Aspinall, but after that the fence was over.

“The Asp” won one leg after another, also because Clayton continued to mess on the check-outs (only 24% successful ejections). Aspinall won 11 legs in a row and 13 of the last 14 legs (18-6), taking home not only the title but also the check for £200,000.
