A ceremony in honor of the national team of local basketball players, champions of Africa, and the women’s national team, runners-up in the Arab basketball championship, was organized on Saturday in Rabat.
Morocco’s national basketball team has won the African Local Players Championship (AfroCan 2023), after beating its Ivorian counterpart 78-76 in the Angolan capital, Luanda, last Sunday.
Speaking on this occasion, the Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, welcomed the remarkable results achieved by the men’s and women’s national basketball teams and which are the result of the efforts of the different components of national basketball.
Mr. Benmoussa praised the work done in recent years by the Royal Moroccan Basketball Federation (FRMB) despite the difficulties encountered, noting that the restructuring of the Federation has made it possible to increase the number of members and contributed to providing suitable conditions for national clubs.
He said that the ministry will work to support the FRMB in the field of training, in order to improve the level of players and achieve better performance, adding, moreover, that it will be proceeded to increase the amounts of scholarships awarded to members of the national team and ensure to support them to maintain the level displayed during the AfroCan and continue on the same dynamic.
And to emphasize that the ministry aspires that basketball has the same interest in national football.
For his part, the president of the FRMB, Mustapha Aourach, expressed his thanks for this ceremony and for the ministry’s support for national basketball, expressing the wish that the African coronation of the national team of local players can augur a bright future for basketball in Morocco.
He noted that the honorable results achieved by the national team constitute a source of motivation to provide more efforts, considering that these results are the fruit of the efforts made by the players, the Federation and the school sport sector, in particular through training.
