Mitch Evans wins after a chaotic e-Prix in Rome

Third victory of the season for Mitch Evans (Jaguar). Starting from pole position, the New Zealander had to fight the whole race but finally won on Saturday in the first race of the Rome e-Prix. His victory allows him to move up to third place in the drivers’ standings.

Second in the race, his compatriot Nick Cassidy (Envision Racing) took the lead in the race for the title of world champion. The New Zealander is ahead on the line of the German Maximilian Günther (Maserati MSG Racing) and especially the Briton Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti), his most serious competitor in the driver standings.

Cassidy now has 171 points, six more than Dennis (166 points). The Briton will have the opportunity to catch up on Sunday, during the second race scheduled in Rome.

Massive mid-race crash

This Rome e-Prix was marked by a major crash involving five drivers. On the tenth lap of the race, Briton Sam Bird (Jaguar TCS Racing) lost control of his car in turn 6.

The Swiss Sébastien Buemi (Envision Racing) then crashed into the rear of the Jaguar, then Lucas Di Grassi, Antônio Félix da Costa and Edoardo Mortara could not help but crash into the two cars. All these pilots came out unscathed from the crash but had to abandon the race. A total of seven drivers did not finish this e-Prix.

Fenestraz momentarily leader

Propelled to the lead of the e-Prix following this crash, Sacha Fenestraz (Nissan) led the race for a few laps, before being overtaken by the favorites. The Frenchman, who started third on the grid, finally finished in tenth place.

Also entered in this e-Prix de Rome, the French Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Penske) and Norman Nato (Nissan) finished fifth and eighth respectively.
