Mexico Dominates Central American and Caribbean Games with Gold Medals in Archery and Open Water

Lhe delegation of Mexico obtained gold medals this Thursday in the disciplines of archery and open water to increase its number of gold metals and continue as the leader of the medal table of the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador and Santo Domingo, which conclude Saturday.

Colombia also had a good day and won two gold medals in speed skating.

Good swimming and good aim
The Mexican team -made up of Paulo Strehlke, Martha Sandoval, Paulina Alanis and Daniel Delgadillo- won the gold medal in the mixed relay event of open water swimming, concluding with a time of 57 minutes and 11 seconds.

Below and with the silver were the Venezuelans with a time of 58:11 and Colombia was left with the bronze at the end of the test with a time of 59:05.

In archery, Mexico also won two gold medals in the mixed recurve team and women’s individual recurve modality.

The first of the day to obtain the gold metal were Matías Grande and Alejandra Valencia, who prevailed in the final of the mixed recurve teams 6-0 against the Venezuelans Daniela Jaramillo and Ricardo Vásquez.

Jaramillo and Vásquez kept the silver and the bronze in this category went to Cuba with a score of 5-1 over Puerto Rico.

Then, in the women’s individual recurve final, Valencia (bronze at Tokyo 2020) won gold after beating Colombian Ana María Rendón 7-1, who won silver.

Multi-medalists Fabriana Arias and Andrés Jiménez gave Colombia another two gold medals in speed skating by winning the women’s and men’s thousand-meter sprint competitions, respectively.

Arias, who has 18 world titles to his credit, won the race with a time of 1:31.611 and beat his compatriot Geiny Pájaro, from whom he took 467 thousandths of a second and had to settle for silver.

The bronze was in the hands of the Venezuelan Angy Quintero, who finished the competition 653 thousandths of the champion.

The Salvadoran karate fighter Gabriella Izaguirre won this Thursday the gold medal in the women’s 50 kilograms category by defeating the Colombian Sofía Cárdenas in combat 5-4.

With the Izaguirre medal, El Salvador has 8 gold medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games, above Panama (5) and Trinidad and Tobago (4).

Three golds for Cuba in canoeing
Robert Benítez and Amado Cruz closed convincingly to win gold in the 1,000-meter two-seater kayak event at the start of canoeing at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

In the “El Rincón” dam, the Caribbean duo was the best in a close final and prevailed with 1.38.03 minutes, followed by the Venezuelan couple, with a record of 1.38.76, and the Mexican, with 1.38.80.
