Mercato: 13 years later, Angel Di Maria returns to Benfica Lisbon

Angel Di Maria finds his first love. The Argentine world champion has signed up with Benfica, finding a club with which he played when he arrived in Europe, the Portuguese club announced on its website on Wednesday. Aged 35, the striker passed by Real Madrid, Manchester United, PSG and Juventus Turin, announced in early June that he was leaving the Italian club.

Targeted by Saudi Arabia, he preferred to return to Benfica, where he played from 2007 to 2010. He is expected there from this Thursday, and supporters are invited to come and welcome him “on Centenary Square, next to of the statue of King Eusébio, at the Stade de la Luz ”from 7:04 p.m., specifies the club founded in… 1904.

In his story on Instagram, the Argentinian reposted a montage of two photos dating from his first visit to Benfica with the caption: “We always return to the places where we were happy”. The Portuguese club did not specify the duration of his commitment.

Brilliant passer, scorer on big occasions and Lionel Messi’s best sidekick in the Argentine selection, Angel Di Maria won the 2014 Champions League and the 2012 Spanish championship with Real Madrid. He was five times French champion with PSG between 2016 and 2022, and Portuguese champion in 2010 with Benfica. He will have spent only one season at Juve, where he arrived free after seven seasons in Paris. He played 40 games there, scoring eight goals, but failed to win a title.
