Max Scherzer Traded to Texas Rangers in Response to Mets’ Trade of David Robertson

Pitcher Max Scherzer said he wanted to speak with New York Mets management following the trade of fellow pitcher David Robertson, and it appears the organization has responded immediately with its own trade.

According to a report by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Mets and Rangers have agreed to a trade for Scherzer. The transaction was approved by the pitcher since he had a no-transfer clause. In exchange, the Mets will acquire Luisangel Acuña, the brother of Ronald Acuña, and pay $35.5 of the remaining $58 million on Scherzer’s contract.

The three-time Cy Young winner has made 19 starts for the Mets in 2023 and is 9-4. His ERA is 4.01 after allowing 48 runs in 107.2 innings and striking out 121 of the 444 batters he’s faced.

Unfortunately, ‘Mad Max’ has allowed 23 home runs this season, which puts him at the top of that category in the National League. According to Baseball Reference, for every nine complete innings, he has allowed 1.9 home runs.

The 39-year-old pitcher will join the AL West-leading Rangers with a 60-44 record and a two-game lead over the Houston Astros (58-46). The season for the Mets has not been the best since they are in fourth position in the NL East with a record of 49-54.

What will the Rangers’ rotation look like with Scherzer?

Currently, the Rangers’ starting rotation consists of Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Martin Perez, Dane Dunning and Andrew Heany. All of them have winning records, but the ERA of Pérez (4.91) and Heaney (4.62) is very high.

In addition, the Texas organization has played without Jacob deGrom since April 28 because of an injury that led to Tommy John surgery, so the arrival of Scherzer was necessary.
