Max Kruse’s Disastrous Comeback: 0-5 Defeat Overshadows Return to Football

This is certainly not how he imagined his competitive comeback …

The return to the football stage for Max Kruse (35) could hardly have been much worse. Against Greuther Fürth, Kruse and new club SC Paderborn got under the wheels at the start, it was 0:5 in the end. Kruse himself had been in the dressing room since half-time!

And that too without the support of the chosen ones: Dilara Kruse flew to France on Sunday morning for the wedding of a close friend. A used afternoon for husband Max.

Clap for Max Kruse on his return

Kruse played his last competitive game in early September 2022 with VfL Wolfsburg (2-4 against FC Köln). Exactly 330 days later he was allowed to play again in a competitive game! This ended a long period of suffering. After terminating his contract with Wolfsburg, the poker fan was unemployed for more than eight months.

But this return ended in a real debacle, Paderborn went down 0:5 in the Ronhof sports park.

The mood among the SCP supporters before kick-off was so good! The star newcomer played in the Sturm-Spitzer from the start, benefiting from the injury to Adriano Grimaldi (32).

Kruse was directly in the game and tried to convert a pass with a hoe after five minutes.

Horror halftime for Kruse

Then the early blow to the neck for the SCP: After a VAR assignment, Visar Musliu (28) received a red card in the 8th minute. Over 80 minutes outnumbered for coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team (42). The beginning of the end …

Paderborn can’t get their feet on the ground anymore, they really get on the ball.

After 35 minutes, Branimir Hrgota (30) scored to give Fürth the lead, shortly before the break Tim Lemperle (21) on loan from Cologne (43rd). With the final whistle of the first half, Hrgota makes Kruse’s horror halftime perfect.

After half-time, Kruse is no longer allowed to play and is replaced by Sirlord Conteh (27). Maximum penalty for the returnee!

But even the replacement of the offensive man does not change the outcome of the game. In the 65th minute, Armindo Sieb scored to make it 4-0, in the 77th minute Damian Michalski made it 5-0. Paderborn and Kruse started the second division season extremely badly, while Fürth confirmed the strong preparation (including a 4-4 win against Liverpool).

Next Friday (6.30 p.m.) Kruse will make his home debut against promoted Osnabrück – then hopefully with a better outcome and support from his chosen ones. Fürth is a guest in Kiel on Saturday (1 p.m.).
