Maurice Steijn, together with three Ajax players, refused to board a propeller plane, De Telegraaf knows. The vehicle was ready to take the selection to Herzogenaurach in Germany, where Ajax will hold a training camp until Saturday. Steijn and the players took a scheduled flight to Nuremberg and arrived a little later.

Ajax arranged a propeller plane to travel to Germany with the entire selection and staff on Monday, but not everyone was happy with that. In addition to Steijn, Brian Brobbey, Steven Bergwijn and Steven Berghuis also did not want to get on board. Thanks to a regular scheduled flight, the foursome were able to join the group that has temporarily settled at the advanced Adidas Campus in Herzogenaurach.

Until Friday, Ajax trains several times a day to prepare for the new season. An exhibition match against FC Augsburg follows on Saturday, after which the selection travels back to the Netherlands. The preparation is not going smoothly for Ajax so far. On Saturday, the team from Amsterdam was swept off the mat by Anderlecht (3-0), after which Steijn openly asked for help from director of football affairs Sven Mislintat.

“We need three or four extra players to compete for the championship,” said Steijn. Ajax is having trouble finding reinforcements this summer. “What you notice is that it is difficult to get good acquisitions. Boys are hesitant, because they have many choices. Financially it is often better elsewhere. And Ajax used to be able to get players because the Champions League was played. We don’t do that now either, but we can’t wait until we have players and the group can’t either.”
