Maodo Lo Leaves Alba Berlin to Join Olimpia Milan

After losing to Ratiopharm Ulm in the playoff final for the German championship, Maodo Lo is drawn to Italy.

The basketball Bundesliga loses a well-known draft horse: National player Maodo Lo leaves the former champion Alba Berlin after three years and joins the Italian record holder Olimpia Milan. The capital club confirmed the change of point guard from the Spree to Berlin’s EuroLeague rivals on Saturday.

“It’s very difficult for me to leave Alba. Berlin is my home and I’m really lucky that there is a great club like Alba in my hometown, who took me in and gave me another incredible step in my career. Now I wanted to take the chance to play abroad again,” Lo explained his decision.

For the Berliners, Lo has been one of the top performers since moving from Bundesliga side Bayern Munich to the metropolis three years ago. The 30-year-old was instrumental in winning the titles in the 2021 and 2022 championships and in the cup success a year ago.

In the past Bundesliga season, which ended for Berlin after the first play-off round, the native of Berlin scored 273 points in 29 games, the fourth-best point tally of his team and was the second-best preparer. Before his commitment in Munich, Lo had started his career in the German upper house with the former title holder Brose Bamberg.

Lo celebrated his greatest international success with the national team in 2022 by winning the bronze medal in the final round of the European Championships in his hometown. The 81-time national player is also part of national coach Gordon Herbert’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup tournament in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines (25 August to 10 September).

Lo’s future club does not belong to the top group in the EuroLeague, like Berlin. In the past season, the Italian title holder, like Berlin and Munich, missed the play-off quarter-finals.
