Manufacturas VU closes its doors due to problems between unions: CTM – El Sol de México

It was a problem between the unions of the CTM and the Liga Sindical Obrero Mexicana (LSOM). In the end, the company Manufacturas VU in Piedras Negras achieved what it wanted: not to have a union movement within it; but the price was very high, it will close its doors these days and therefore, a source of employment.

This was expressed by Leocadio Hernández Torres, regional leader of the Federation of Northern Coahuila Workers of the CTM in an interview with El Sol de México, about the conflict with the company Manufacturas VU.

The Cetemista leader of 95 percent of the maquiladoras in Piedras Negras, where 20,000 workers work, spoke out for “taking care of the companies, especially in the border area.”

He referred: “many companies do not own anything: they rent buildings, they rent machinery, they hire workers. Those companies for me are circus tents, because today they are gone tomorrow”.

Regarding the history of this labor dispute, he said:

“Here the problem, the story has a beginning: the company did not want to have a union. Many of the workers looked for us in the CTM, others leaned towards those of the Union League”.

“When the company was already going to accept the union with the CTM, the League that worked underwater emerged. The count was made. But like the dice are loaded.

-Yeah.

But have they already been fired?

Yes, but that’s not the point. The point is that the League wins the count. We adjust. They are the majority and we are the minority. They do the collective labor contract (CCT) project, they ask for things that are out of context. And the company does not want to negotiate.

We continue working, working, working and we already had a majority. We sent a document and they have not resolved it; but they also promoted amparo. So far we understand it and it’s fine.

“What is not worth it is that the people of the League send letters to the company’s agents who are the ones who give them the contracts for the material to be processed and the company loses contracts and the company becomes weak and no longer has the same situation and decides to close.

And now?

Now the conflict is over. There is no company anymore. There are still about 80 workers to finish (liquidate); but they have already thrown away all the workers of the League. And we have to wait for the CTM to finish them.

But the ones that could negotiate collective issues was the Union League, not us, clarifies the leader of the CTM.

-Yes, it was never signed because it had demands out of context.

We are trade unionists and for me those of the Union League are our brothers, because we must be a brotherhood in unionization. Remember that now with the measures of the T-MEC, much more.

-What is said is one thing and reality is another. You have to wait for things to show up.

-In 95 percent of the maquiladora plants, about 20,000 workers, I handle union issues for the CTM of the maquiladora industry. We bring other types of business, but most are maquiladoras.

-No, there is no plant anymore.

-About 12 to 14 years old. And the CTM just entered. The company did not want to know anything about unions. He sent a letter and the union was accepted, but when there were already people with the other current and there the problem arose.

We have to take care of companies, especially in border areas. Many companies do not own anything: they rent a building, rent machinery, hire workers. Those companies for me are circus tents, because today they are there and tomorrow they are gone.

But how many circus tents do we have at the national level that do guide them and ask for salaries much higher than normal are going to leave. And who is going to give these people work? Mexican companies?

And what is done with those companies?

-I have to find the balance, a healthy balance. Negotiate through a group of workers as best as possible for the worker, without hurting the permanence of the company.

Didn’t the double increase in wages affect companies in the border area?

-Yes affection and they accepted. But I must say that the increases for me are a fallacy because the worker is the same. He earns more money, yes, more pesos, yes, but there is no price control and today the worker pays more taxes.

Has inflation skyrocketed?

-Yeah. The increases are not enough to cover the products of the basic basket. Unfortunately. It is a complicated question. And the only one that does win is the government, because employers pay more money in salaries. “there is more purchasing power”, in quotes.

More taxes are paid, more VAT, MORE ISR, Taxes on the work product, etc. And the one that does better is the government because it captures more money through taxes.

The worker remains almost the same as before. You have to see for a reasonable increase. The egg cover costs 80, 90 pesos; beans between 30 to 40 pesos per kilogram.

In the northern border area there is a situation: high temperatures. Today it is cloudy and the weather is comfortable but we reached 46 degrees Celsius last week. Yes, Saltillo, which is a paradise in terms of weather, reached 40 degrees.
