AS Saint-Etienne is in mourning. This Tuesday evening, the Forézien club announced the disappearance of its legend Georges Bereta at the age of 77 following a long illness.
“ASSE loses a legendary player, an immense track record, an ambassador for life. The sadness is infinite. (…) He made the crowds rise and will contribute, tomorrow again, to the greatness of our AS Saint-Étienne” , wrote the Greens on Twitter.
Six-time French champion with ASSE (1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975), the left-hander also won 4 French Cups, including one with Olympique de Marseille, a club he joined in 1975 after to have become, in his words, the “first French player transferred to the transfer window”. The attacking midfielder also had 44 caps in the France team (4 goals) and had worn the captain’s armband 12 times.
