Latvian U18 Women’s Basketball Team Finishes Fourth in European Championship

For the winners, Dominika Ullman was the most productive with 19 points, while Nikola Tomasik was the most productive with six points, six steals and nine assists.

Both teams made 18 long-range shots, but the Latvians made only one, and the opponents – eight three-pointers. Latvian basketball players also had a worse percentage of two-point shots (42%/48%).

In the first match of the subgroup, the Latvian national team lost to Spain with a score of 50:78, then defeated Israel with a score of 73:62, but lost to Serbia with a score of 54:88 in the last match and took the third place in subgroup C. In the round of 16, Latvians beat Germany 72:59, while in the quarterfinals they lost 36:81 against France, followed by a 51:65 defeat against Turkey.

On the other hand, Poland finished fourth in subgroup B, losing all three games, but defeated Portugal 81:63 in the round of 16, followed by a defeat in the quarterfinals against Serbia (65:75). The day before, the Polish women lost to Hungary with 40:74.

Most of the Latvian players played in the Baltic Women’s Basketball League and the Latvian Women’s Basketball League during the season, but Krista Lukaševica played in the Spanish Junior League last season. Last year, four players already participated in the European U18 Championship, helping to win the ninth place, but five basketball players from this team will be able to represent the U18 national team next year as well.

While preparing for the European Championship, the Latvians lost to Estonia 72:76 in the Baltic Cup and defeated Lithuania 65:48, but in the test tournament in France they lost to the hosts 48:74 and the Belgians 62:95, and also beat the Lithuanians again (79:71).

The head coach of the national team, Rudolph Rozītis, is assisted by coach Ingūna Markūne and physical training coach Ivars Iksten.

The European Championship in Turkey will end on Sunday.
