Kyle Anderson to Represent China in Basketball World Cup

(Reuters) – Kyle Anderson, 29, of the Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA), said on Thursday he will represent China in the World Cup basketball tournament.

Anderson is an American from New York. This is the first time a basketball player has been naturalized in China.

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) posted on Weibo that “(Anderson) obtained Chinese citizenship and met with CBA President Yao Ming this morning.”

Anderson himself later confirmed that he would play for China at the World Cup, writing on Weibo that he was “very proud and honored to wear the uniform of the Chinese national team.”

The basketball World Cup, co-hosted by Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia, starts on August 25.
