The promotion and relegation league of the badminton event, which competes for first and second place in the number of domestic club members, has more than doubled from last year when it was first implemented, adding to the heat.

According to data distributed to reporters by the Korea Badminton Association (Chairman Kim Taek-gyu) on the 25th, badminton was selected as a new event in the Korea Sports Council’s promotion and relegation league business last year, and the scale was further increased this year. With a budget of 2.1 billion won last year, 62 leagues in the 5 divisions participated, and the size of the business increased to 2.5 billion won this year, and 125 leagues nationwide were selected and operated since May. If you look at the number of leagues alone, that’s more than a doubling.

The promotion and relegation league business is operated as a 5-step pyramidal system of promotion and relegation to strengthen the connection between professional sports and sports for everyday life. The goal is to create an environment where anyone can enjoy badminton happily and healthily through the regular operation of regional leagues, interest in badminton, expansion of the base, and vitalization of clubs.

The association is subsidizing labor costs for a dedicated manager in an attempt to run the league. In order to support league operating expenses and prepare for safety accidents of participants, the organizers also subscribed to liability insurance.

The promotion and relegation league business is supervised by the association and hosted by the Korea Olympic Committee. It is operated with financial support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Sports Promotion Corporation. It is estimated that there are more than 200,000 badminton club members, but some say that the number exceeds 1 million if the number of people who exercise lightly and not regularly is included.
