Kasatkina Criticizes “Very Strict Rules” in WTA 250 Tournaments: “Complete Bullshit”

In a video on her shared YouTube channel, Kasatkina and her partner Natalia Zabiiako raged about the “very strict rules” at the small WTA 250 tournaments. Meanwhile, Zabiiako put his arm around her and agreed.

It is not okay that a maximum of one top 10 player is allowed to participate in a WTA 250 tournament like the Palermo Open and that top 10 players are allowed to participate in a maximum of two WTA 250 tournaments per year, Kasatkina complained. “I just can’t understand these stupid rules.”

Because of this, it is “very difficult to survive” for these tournaments, Kasatkina complained. “I can’t understand how these tournaments make money if they can’t invite top players,” said Kasatkina.

Without explicitly naming the WTA, the current number 11 in the world rankings criticized: “They say that the 250 tournaments have no money. Of course they have no money, they can’t bring in any. They don’t support them.”

Kasatkina on new rules in 250 tournaments: “Complete bullshit”

The 26-year-old referred to the ATP tournaments in the 250 category, in which two top 10 players are eligible. “People can come, they watch, there are broadcasts. There is life in these tournaments.”

From 2024, the rules will be further tightened. Players from the top 30 are not allowed to participate in WTA 250 tournaments if a WTA 500 tournament is taking place at the same time. Exceptions are the defending champions and players from the country of the organizer. Kasatkina’s snide comment: “This is complete bullshit.”
