Jasper Philipsen thinks it is “a pity that there is commotion”: “Everything is magnified in the Tour” | Vive le Velo

Jasper Philipsen’s handsome victory in Bordeaux soon ended up in the shadows again. The sprint bomb deviated from its line and, as with the past sprints, there was some fuss. “Too bad,” he says to himself. National coach Sven Vanthourenhout supports him: “If this happens on day 1, we won’t even talk about it.”

In Vive le Vélo there was only one real topic of conversation tonight.

Jasper Philipsen shaves high peaks, but also catches a lot of wind. And we are not talking about the wind in the sprints, because he hardly catches behind Van der Poel’s back.

However, he ended up in the eye of a storm again today after a pendulum movement that forced Girmay to brake.

“It’s a pity that there is commotion about it,” he says.

Mark also starts in the center and then swerves to the right.

“Mathieu has to stop his lead-out just a little too quickly, but then I feel Mark coming from the right”, Philipsen analyzes the situation.

“The man in front always determines the line, so I jump to his wheel. And if you look closely, you can see that Mark also starts in the center and then swerves to the right.”

“Then it is logical that Girmay gets a bit stuck, but that’s just how sprinting is. Things are always magnified in the Tour,” concludes the fast man.

Despite the fuss, Philipsen was still allowed to celebrate his 3rd stage victory in this Tour.

“just acceptable”

There were mixed reactions within the Tour peloton after the finish. Biniam Girmay said nothing had happened, his team boss Bourlart was very critical of the Belgian.

But at Vive le Vélo’s table, only one reaction came up.

“If something like this happens on day 1, it is never even talked about,” says Sven Vanthourenhout.

“It’s just because there was commotion in the previous sprints that there is something to do now.”

The riders who have started to file a complaint should also pay attention from now on.

Adrian van der Poel

“If you look from the air, you can indeed see Philipsen swerve a bit to the right. But he just dives to Cavendish’s wheel, which any sprinter would do,” concludes the national coach.

“Is it not even a bit on the edge? Not for me,” says Adrie van der Poel. “And it’s not because it’s Philipsen, mind you.”

“The riders who have filed a complaint now also have to pay attention. They will also be monitored more closely in the next sprint.”

And even the 3rd guest at the table agrees that Philipsen is doing nothing wrong. “I think it’s just acceptable,” says Yoica De Kock.

“So we should just be proud that Jasper is Belgian and we should actually be the last to criticize him,” Vanthourenhout suggests.

And finally, dad Van der Poel also does that with his own son.

“There was still room on the left and he was actually half past it”, he looks back on Mathieu’s declassification earlier this week.

“And some riders just get in your way on purpose. You just have to accept such decisions from the jury and then it’s done,” he concludes.

“But it’s good that safety comes first today.”

Van der Poel was declassified for this.
