Status: 04.07.2023 15:06

Italy’s Serie A wants more transparency with the video referees. The audio recordings of the agreements between field and video referees are to be published from the coming season.

According to the head of the football association, Gabriele Gravina, Italy is the first country to take this step. In the future, what is discussed in Serie A during a game between the referee on the pitch and the video assistant referees should be public for everyone.

Recordings are to be published at the beginning of the week

It is planned that the recordings of particularly controversial scenes from the previous match day will be published at the beginning of each week. The holder of the TV rights in Italy, a streaming service, is then allowed to publish the audio and video recordings and make them part of its programming. There is nothing to hide, emphasizes the head of the association, Gravina, and the football association wants the greatest possible transparency, including in the decisions of the video referees.

In the past season, there was frequent criticism of the intervention of the video assistants in Italy. There was also a case involving AS Roma coach José Mourinho. The Portuguese claimed after a game that he wore a hidden microphone under his clothing to secretly record what the referees said.

Start of the new Serie A season

The new transparency in the Italian Serie A should start with the first matchday of the new season. Association boss Gravina hopes that the publication of the discussions between field and video referees will help fans and interested parties better understand in the future how difficult it is to referee a football game and always make the right decisions.
