How traditional clubs can assert themselves

Nothing again: Most recently, HSV failed in the relegation. Image: dpa

Hertha, Schalke, Hamburg or 1. FC Nuremberg. They don’t lack loyal fans, but many traditional clubs are often not doing too well in terms of sport and economy. Why is that?

Just went well again: This is how the past season of 1. FC Nürnberg can be summed up in a nutshell. Up until the last day of the game, it was possible to go into league 3. In the end, 14th place was recorded. Disappointing, but at least staying up. It would have been difficult for the “club” if they had gone down, says Niels Rossow. Since October 2018, the 46-year-old, who was born in Nuremberg, has been the commercial director and thus the counterpart to Dieter Hecking, who is responsible for the sporting area.

Hecking recently had to step in as interim coach himself. Now Cristian Fiel, an old acquaintance of Hecking, takes over. They met each other as a player and coach more than ten years ago at Alemannia Aachen. At that time, Aachen made it as a second division team to the third round of the Uefa Cup. Another traditional club whose golden days are long gone.
