HSV is hosting FC Schalke 04 this Friday evening. The opening game of the 2nd Bundesliga is really tough.
“We’re just happy that things are getting started,” agrees Hamburg coach Tim Walter (47). After the comparatively meager results in preparation, the focus is now fully on the start of the season.
3:3 against Viktoria Pilsen, 1:4 against RB Salzburg and 1:2 against Glasgow Rangers. After these three test games, everyday life in the second division is now waiting. The sixth season in the second division starts on Friday for Hamburg. This year there are two big competitors, Schalke and Hertha, who want direct promotion.
“The league is very sexy, quite attractive and we’re looking forward to that,” explains Walter at the press conference before the opening game.

Schalke have not won against HSV since 2017. In the three duels that have taken place since then, Hamburg has won twice. Will that change on Friday?
Not only Hamburg has its sights set on promotion. “I said clearly that we want to get promoted and even if the first games don’t go well, you have to endure it,” reveals Schalke coach Thomas Reis (49) in the BILD podcast “Phrasen Mäher”.
