Goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck has to leave the training camp

Actually, the soccer players from Hertha BSC wanted to use the Monday to relax. Regeneration was on the agenda at the training camp in the Austrian town of Zell am See after the strenuous sessions of the past few days. But neither the team nor the club could switch off. All those involved were concerned with one issue that had already leaked out at the weekend and culminated in the departure of Marius Gersbeck.

The goalkeeper is accused of injuring an Austrian in the course of a dispute. “Marius Gersbeck left the training camp yesterday. Sporting management and management will now evaluate the situation internally, taking into account the ongoing investigations,” Hertha announced at the beginning of the week.

“Verbal argument escalated”

Gersbeck is said to have had an argument with another guest in a restaurant on Saturday evening. The dispute is said to have continued on a street early Sunday morning. The Salzburg-based police department confirmed that “a 28-year-old German and a 22-year-old local got into an argument on a street in the town of Zell am See in the early hours of the morning”.

“This verbal argument then escalated into a physical altercation, during which the 28-year-old injured the 22-year-old indefinitely on the body.” According to the police, witnesses then notified the emergency services, and the 22-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital . It is unclear what the dispute was about.

Once part of the fan scene

Gersbeck switched from Karlsruher SC to Hertha BSC just a few weeks ago. With his return, those responsible hoped to get closer to their own audience. Gersbeck already played for Hertha during his youth and not only supported the club on the pitch, but also from the stands. Like today’s President Kay Bernstein, Gersbeck was part of the active fan scene.

He made his professional debut at the end of 2013. Later he was awarded repeatedly as a junior international. First to Chemnitz, then to Osnabrück, before finally leaving Berlin and moving to Karlsruhe. There he developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the second division.

He should now show his skills again at his home club, Hertha planned him as a future first-choice goalkeeper, as it was assumed that the Dane Oliver Christensen could still be sold profitably. The club is plagued by massive financial problems, Hertha urgently needs to achieve transfer surpluses. Whether Christensen will be sold after the recent events is just as uncertain as Marius Gersbeck’s future at Hertha BSC. Gersbeck himself did not want to comment on the allegations when asked by the FAZ, as a club spokeswoman said.
