Two years after arriving in the French capital and 12 months after being voted the clear number one by Christophe Galtier, catches Gianluigi Donnarumma again at zero.
In the 2021/2022 season, the Italy international goalkeeper spent most of the time behind Keylor Navas on the substitutes’ bench. He finally enjoyed number one status last season.
But so far and as before at AC Milan, he has lacked consistency. “How do you say something about Gigi: He holds the unstoppable and makes bucks with the simplest balls,” summarizes ex-PSG goalkeeper Jérôme Alonzo in an interview with SPORT1:
“Basically, he played a solid season in 2022/2023, but nothing more. In the end, he was slightly below expectations, also because he didn’t excel in the Champions League in particular, or couldn’t play the decisive role.”
Donnarumma’s future in the PSG goal is uncertain
The loan of his direct competitor Navas in January to Nottingham Forest has for no relief provided at Donnarumma. He also made slight mistakes afterwards and regularly showed blatant technical weaknesses.
Accordingly, Luis Enrique is not a big fan of the 24-year-old, as can be heard on the Seine these days. Galtier’s successor would like open competition with a new face.
After his loan to Nottingham, Navas is set to be sold on. Former France national goalkeeper Hugo Lloriswho will leave Tottenham after eleven years, and Moroccan Yassine Bono from FC Sévilla are hot topics right now.
Expert with a clear demand on PSG coach Enrique
One thing is clear: the Italian would certainly not be able to do much or anything with this new constellation. Most recently, he is said to have even been offered to Manchester City to be offset in a transfer from Bernardo Silva to Paris. The Champions League winner immediately rejected this offer.
So the situation is getting more and more explosive. “In the past few years, whether first with Kevin Trapp and Alphonse Aréola or then with Navas and Donnarumma, we’ve had enough fuss and unrest in this position,” remembers Alonzo, who today analyzes Ligue 1 as an Amazon Prime expert.
That’s why it’s clear for the ex-keeper: “In this respect, it will be of great importance that Luis Enrique does not initiate any unnecessary sources of fire in the situation. He should rather ensure a clear hierarchy in the position during the pre-season. I am convinced that he already has clear ideas on this subject.”
