Girona recovers Iván Martín to keep him in ownership

It was a demand since the season ended, but the process has taken longer than expected. The Girona made official this afternoon the signing of Iván Martín, who signs a contract until 2026 with the Montilivi club. The transfer has been closed by 1.7 million euros after reaching an agreement with Villarreal. Both entities had been in talks for a long time because, aside from the transfer of the Basque winger and midfielder during a season and a half in Girona, Terrats left for La Cerámica last winter and did not return after the Groguets made effective the option clause for purchase for 2.5 million that was included in the loan. Despite the fact that the two operations have been independent, the good relationship between them has been key to bringing positions together.

the continuity ofivan martin it has always been one of Míchel’s wishes. The coach intends to maintain the bulk of the squad, as long as there is no unexpected exit like that of Oriol Romeu to Barça, and, in this sense, Quique Cárcel is gradually recovering the pieces. In addition, he does this with players in possession as much as possible. First it was Gazzaniga, then Juan Carlos, Borja García, Yangel Herrera and YanCouto. Now it was Iván Martín. They all had to end first his time in Montilivi, but the club has made sure to retain them either by renewing them (JuanCarlos and Borja García) or by extending the transfer (Couto) or by fixing them in ownership (Gazzaniga, Yangel Herrera and IvánMartín).

Iván Martín has been in Girona for a few days and has even trained with the team later joining the stay which today ended with a draw against Andorra (2-2) at the facilities of Royalverd in the Vall d’en Bas – he didn’t play the game and wasn’t on the bench either. Given that he is already training with his team-mates, has passed his medical and has been announced, it is highly likely that he will be part of the squad that will travel to Manchester next Monday for the start of the third week of pre-season.

In this way, the Basque winger, 24 years old, starts his third consecutive season at Girona after arriving there in January 2022 with the team in the Second Division in search of the minutes he did not have in the first part of the season on loan to Alabès. Villarreal knew that Girona was the ideal place to grow him because at the time they also had Álex Baena on loan there. With Míchel, he understood himself immediately. Iván Martín was one of the protagonists of the promotion to the First Division. In just half a year, he played 19 games, including the final of the play-off in Tenerife, where a very hard tackle from Sant Joan’s Álex Corredera caused him to fracture his fibula, which kept him sidelined until November when he returned through the big gate with a goal in the victory against Athletic (2-1). Since then, Míchel has counted on him when he has been available. It was even decided to pay the fine to face Villarreal considering that his exclusion included the fear clause in the transfer. Last year he played a total of 26 games between League and Copa del Rey, provided three assists and scored three goals.

This year, Iván Martín aims to be one of the leading footballers. That is why, the international in the lower categories with the Spanish national team, has discarded other offers that he had on the table such as that of Athletic and has decided to follow Montilivi for three seasons more aware that he has the support of the whole club to continue consolidating in LaLiga sharing interests with the Girona.

The addition of Iván Martín joins the arrivals of Pablo Torre, Couto, Yangel Herrera, Savinho, Borja García and Daley Blind during this summer transfer window. Currently, Cárcel is focusing its efforts on finding a ‘6’ of guarantees to cover the void left by the departure of Oriol Romeu to Barça.
