In addition to taking part in the World Cup for VfL Wolfsburg, she is currently completing her master’s degree in controlling, having previously completed her bachelor’s degree in business mathematics – two quite complex courses. “I don’t like the word nerd,” says Lattwein now German press agency. Nevertheless, she is convinced that sport and education are very compatible. Ultimately, similar qualities are decisive in both areas: “Discipline, a certain ambition and fun,” she explains.

But how do you manage to reconcile your studies and professional football? And above all: How do you achieve such an outstanding Abitur? Lattwein emphasizes that good self-discipline and effective time management are essential, especially in competitive sports. But she adds that she liked going to school and that learning was easy for her. Admittedly, not all subjects inspire her equally, and music and religion are not among her favourites. On the other hand, she really enjoyed subjects such as math, Latin, history and chemistry.

Lena Lattwein: model student, vice European champion and soon the world title?

In the meantime, she has pushed her international football career forward: the native of Neunkirchen became vice-European champion with the DFB women last year and is now facing her 30th international match.

She was also called up to the DFB squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. When asked whether a high school diploma with a grade of 1 or the World Cup title is more valuable, the midfielder hesitates and emphasizes that other things in life are more important. Nevertheless, she admits: “It’s cool when you have it. Both.”

Lattwein’s tip for school: learn a little bit every day

She has a valuable tip for school: Although her time at the desk was limited by the training times, every evening she repeated the material from the subjects that were due the following day. She never had to learn everything at once for class work. Is it the secret recipe for a 0.7 Abi?

German football fans will also need to bring some math skills with them to the upcoming Women’s World Cup. The time shift is a little complicated. (acl/dpa)
