German Delegation Competes in Multiple Sports at University Games in Chengdu

The 6500 students who compete there also include 160 participants from Germany who compete in badminton, archery, fencing, judo, artistic gymnastics, athletics, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball and water polo and diving at the start.

Gymnast Aiyu Zhu and swimmer Henning Mühlleitner had their first special moment, leading the German delegation to carry the flag into the stadium together. “It was an incredibly exciting feeling to run into the full stadium with the flag,” Zhu is quoted as saying on the website of the general German university sports association (adh).

Mühlleitner, fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in the 400m freestyle, added: “We were greeted with thunderous applause in the packed stadium. That was a real goosebump moment. We are all really looking forward to the upcoming competitions and to spending time with athletes from all over the world here in Chengdu.”

Judoka Annika Würfel was able to celebrate the first German medal with bronze in the class up to 52 kilograms. In the battle for third place, she defeated Gultay Mammadaliyeva by a big score. Gold went to Hibiki Shiraishi from Japan. The tournament ended prematurely for Alessio Murone in the class up to 60 kilograms, Laila Göbel (up to 57 kilograms) and David Ickes (up to 66 kilograms).

Meanwhile, the German water polo players started the tournament with one win and one loss. The team defeated Japan 14-8 the day before the opening ceremony. In the second group game, Hungary lost 13:18.

The German table tennis players got off to a good start in the team competition. The women with Janina Kammerer, Alena Lemmer and Caroline Hajdok defeated Azerbaijan 3:0. With the same result, Kirill Fadeev, Florian Bluhm and Tobias Hippler were successful in the men’s competition against Norway. In the second group game, however, the women had to admit defeat to India 1:3.

For the German archers, the tournament is already over. Jonathan Vetter lost 6-0 to Sergej Podkrajsek of Slovenia in the first knockout round. In round two, Johanna Klinger was beaten by the Indian Sangeeta 3:7. In the mixed team, Klinger and Vetter survived the opening round with a clear 6:0 against Switzerland, but lost 3:5 to France in the round of 16.
