A fundraiser to promote S’istrumpa the ancient Sardinian fight. It is an initiative organized by the Polisportiva TEAM Gigliotti Nuoro which, in addition to Judo, also practices this ancient sporting discipline.
An activity recognized by CONI and FIJLKAM where istrumpa wrestlers compete with athletes from different nations after joining the International Celtic Struggle Federation (FILC).
TEAM Gigliotti has been working in the city for years to raise young athletes who can compete in competitions and to maintain a discipline that risks disappearing and with it part of the most authentic Sardinian tradition.
«We therefore believe it is necessary to implement promotion, publicity and valorisation initiatives also through the request, in an institutional setting, for the relaunch of this discipline as a Sardinian national sport, supporting it with awards and funding that allow it to regain a role of interest in the culture , both Sardinian and national» says Giovanni Gigliotti.
S’strumpa (from the Sardinian “Istrumpare” which means to knock down the opponent) was practiced in Sardinia during all occasions of popular encounters, such as country festivals, religious ceremonies, livestock fairs, collective agricultural and pastoral rituals such as the harvest, the threshing and shearing of sheep.
Some scholars have defined it as an example of “living archeology” since this ancestral struggle is still practiced today, testified by Nuragic finds – the Nuragic civilization goes from 1800 BC to 200 BC – found thanks to archaeological excavations carried out in different parts of the island. for example the famous Bronze of the Wrestlers of Uta.
The “de S’Istrumpa” wrestling is very close to freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling, it is certainly one of the oldest in the world, with the classic arm-trunk grip technique.
