Francis Tiafoe Reflects on Devastating Defeat at Wimbledon

But Dimitrov was done right on the court with the 25-year-old American in 99 minutes without having to face a single break point.

“This was a really bad match for me. Horrible, horrible business. To put in such a poor performance is depressing, especially here at Wimbledon. I really think I’m one of the best grass players in the world, but I haven’t shown it at all. I’ll have to live with it somehow,” the Hyattsville native begged in front of reporters at the All England Club.

“It will hurt for a long time. I can’t digest it. I have never felt this way after a defeat. I am shocked by what I have performed. I played terribly, it’s unacceptable to lose serve so many times on grass,” he continued in harsh self-criticism.

At the same time, Tiafoe won the title in Stuttgart before Wimbledon, which moved him into the elite world ten. That way he could have high ambitions. However, he denies that his defeat to Dmitrov was a result of high expectations and pressure.

“It has nothing to do with expectations. They don’t interest me at all. I want to win a Grand Slam for myself, not for others. It was just a terrible performance. And it is hard for me to understand how it happened. I’m in the top 10 and I’ve been playing like I don’t have a single ATP point. Disgust,” explained the American.

“It hurts so bad, I don’t know how to deal with it. I was planning how I would come home and celebrate being in the top ten in the world. But now it will be very difficult,” he added sadly.
