Formula 1 will drive twice on Saturdays in 2024 due to the month of Ramadan

The World Automobile Federation (FIA) and Formula 1 have presented the calendar for the coming year. The season consists of 24 races; it begins on March 2, 2024 in Bahrain. The finale will take place in Abu Dhabi on December 8th. There will still be no World Championship race in Germany, the last time was at the Nürburgring in 2020. After that, the holding of further World Championship races failed due to the financing.

The first two races of the year will be held on a Saturday this time and not on the usual Sunday. In doing so, those responsible want to take account of the Islamic month of fasting at the start in Bahrain and at the second race weekend in Saudi Arabia. Ramadan begins next year on March 10th, on the weekend of the Saudi Grand Prix.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix was again scheduled for a Saturday, like the premiere this November. Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali had already made it clear in the past that the traditional Sunday date was not binding for him and had shown himself to be more flexible: “Formula 1 must not be static. We can’t be saying that every race has to start at 3 p.m. That would be a serious mistake.” In earlier decades, Formula 1 raced more often on Saturdays, for example in South Africa or Great Britain.

In addition, Formula 1 and FIA have made some changes to the calendar for the upcoming season. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was moved from spring to September. The Japan race was postponed to April for this. The Qatar Grand Prix will be held in Abu Dhabi immediately before the final. Formula 1 “made it clear that it intends to regionalize the calendar more” and “reduce the logistical effort,” it said. This year, for example, Formula 1 traveled from Australia to Azerbaijan, from there to Miami, before circling in Monte Carlo.

There will be no new routes in the coming year. However, Formula 1 returns to China. Because of the corona pandemic, the last time was in Shanghai in 2019. In the USA, where the racing series is particularly popular at the moment, three World Championship races will take place again, in Miami, Austin/Texas and Las Vegas.

If all 24 Grands Prix take place as planned, that would mean a new record. There were so many races on the schedule for this year as well. However, the Chinese Grand Prix was canceled again, and the race in Imola was canceled due to a flood disaster.
