Die-hard tennis fans have probably recognized them long ago. Because in the 90s she was one of the biggest. Her duels with our tennis queen Steffi Graf are unforgettable.
In 1989, the then 17-year-old Catalan surprised at the French Open, beating Graf in a thrilling final – her first of a total of four Grand Slam successes in singles. In 1994 and 1998 she triumphed twice more in Roland Garros, in 1994 she won the US Open – again against Graf. However, she lost five more Grand Slam finals against the icon (once at the Australian Open, twice in Paris and Wimbledon). No other rival met Graf more often on the big stage.

Spaniards love Hamburg and the traditional tournament
The former number one in the tennis world is currently the guest of honor at the Hamburg tennis tournament at Rothenbaum. The tournament she won in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Twice she beat Graf in the final, twice (1990 and 1992) she lost in the final against the German.

The traditional tournament has been one of her favorite events ever since. “It’s the best city for me, I feel at home here because the people have been very nice to me. And I’ve always played well here,” she says in an RTL interview. “I love the tournament”.
During her playing days, she was always seen on the pitch with dark hair and a headband – her trademark. Now 51 years old, she wears her hair lighter today and looks stunning.

Tennis legend in the sights of the judiciary
In 2002 she ended her career. Hard times followed. In a biography published in 2012, she accused her parents of having spent the entire earnings of her career (around 45 million euros), she sued her father and brothers for embezzlement, the case ended in a settlement.
She herself was repeatedly targeted by the judiciary for property and tax matters.
In private, she is a mother of two children.
