With Tobin as head coach, the Cardinals earned their first postseason victory since 1947 in the 1998 playoffs.
Former head coach of the Arizona CardinalsVince Tobin, who helped the franchise end a playoff drought of more than 50 years, died Monday. He was 79 years old.
The cause of death was not immediately released.
Tobin led the Cardinals to a playoff berth in 1998 and a 20-7 upset win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round. It was the first postseason win for the Cardinals since 1947, when the organization, still based in Chicagowill defeat the Philadelphia Eagles by 28-21 in the NFL Championship Game.

Tobin was hired in 1996 to succeed Buddy Ryan as the head coach of Arizona and went 28-43 in parts of five seasons. He was fired in Week 8 of the 2000 season after a 2-5 start.

“His football legacy with us was highlighted by an exciting 1998 campaign, return to the postseason, and upset win at Dallas. He will be remembered for his instrumental role in key decisions such as recruitment Jake Plummer y Pat Tillman. More than that, he was an accomplished family man and always a first-class guy who positively impacted everyone he encountered.”

Tobin was the defensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears from 1986 to ’92. Took over under head coach Mike Ditka when Ryan emigrated to become head coach of the Eagles.
Also, he was defensive coordinator in the CFL y USFL and with the Indianapolis Colts (1994-95) y Detroit Lions (2001).
Tobin was exalted in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 with his brother Bill. Vince Tobin He was a two-year starter for the Tigers and later became an assistant coach from 1965 to ’76.
