Football: Anthony Baron, defender of Guadeloupe, scores a goal worthy of Zidane

The genius of Yoann Gourcuff has taken possession of the body of Anthony Baron. While European football lay dormant, a fabulous goal set the footballing world on the other side of the planet on fire. Fourteen years after Bordeaux’s masterpiece against Paris Saint-Germain, Baron produced a sublime sequence against Cuba.

The Guadeloupe defender (30) completed the success of his team on the occasion of the second day of the group stage of the Gold Cup (4-1). In the 50th minute, the Servette FC player appeared at the entrance to the Cuban penalty area to get ahead of an opponent’s tackle. With a double contact right foot, left foot, he slipped between two players, before delighting the crowd with a superb roulette to bypass the last defender.

His technical gesture, marked by a last rather long touch of the ball, allowed him to come face to face with the goalkeeper. The style of the finish may not live up to the rest of the action, but his half-pointed, half-inside-foot strike allowed Baron to slip the ball to the keeper’s left and into Cuban nets.

Before this feat, the former Grenoble and Guingampais Matthias Phaëton had scored twice to place Guadeloupe in the best conditions. The Gwada Boys are first in Pool D. With 4 points, they are ahead of Guatemala on goal difference. Baron will have the opportunity to shine against the Guatemalans to validate his team’s ticket to the quarter-finals of the North American competition.

Born in Villepinte, Anthony Baron, 30, had a modest career in National teams before going into exile in Switzerland in 2019. This season, the central defender played around fifteen matches with Servette, second in the championship of Swiss.
