Football: Al-Ahli recruits Jaissle from Salzburg

According to the club, the 35-year-old German signed a contract with al-Ahly until 2026. As a result, Salzburg will receive a transfer fee of around three to four million euros, which consists of the fixed salary and variable payments.

The “Bulls” are thus losing another leading figure of the past years of success. Sports director Christoph Freund will work for Bayern Munich from September. Salzburg’s Gerhard Struber, who was fired by the New York Red Bulls in May, is being discussed in the media as a possible Jaissle successor.

Successor urgently needed

“Now that the change has taken place, it is important for us to find a new coach as quickly as possible who knows our style of play and with whom we can continue on the Salzburg path that has been so successful up to now. Even if the end of the cooperation with Matthias was not as we had imagined, we wish him all the best,” said Managing Director Stephan Reiter.

For the time being, the two co-trainers Florens Koch and Alexander Hauser will take over the coaching duties at Salzburg on an interim basis and will also be on the bench at the championship opener in Altach on Saturday.

Only three defeats in the two Bundesliga seasons

Jaissle was promoted from Liefering to Salzburg coach in June 2021. As the successor to the American Jesse Marsch, the former defender gave Salzburg football a more serious touch when it came to the game system. What was at the expense of attractiveness resulted in respectable performances in the Champions League (third place in the group, participation in the round of 16) and only three defeats (two times by Sturm Graz and one by Austria Klagenfurt) in the championship. In 92 competitive games under Jaissle, Salzburg scored an average of 2.28 points.

With his jump, a novelty that was actually planned by the club was cancelled: The German would have been the first Salzburg coach in the “Bullen” era (since 2005) to look after the league’s crowning glory in three Bundesliga seasons. The Salzburg management will be reassured that the club has once again qualified for the Champions League, which does not begin until September.

Well-known newcomers to the climber

Since the sensational transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, many colleagues have followed the Portuguese superstar. Jaissle will train ex-Liverpool star Roberto Firmino, with whom he played as a professional in Hoffenheim.

Champions League winner Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City), goalkeeper Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) or North Macedonia’s Ezgjan Alioski are also already on the payroll of the three-time champions who have just returned to the top division.
